The well-established Danish jazz festival, Vinterjazz, gets bigger every year. Most of Denmark’s jazz-playing venues are now involved in the event which, in 2016, will last for a whole three weeks, running from 5 to 28 February.
Søren has been part of the programming and PR team for one of the venues, Metronomen at Frederiksberg (in Copenhagen), for the last three years. “In 2016 we’ve got about 40 concerts in just 23 days!” he tells us excitedly. The full programme appears below.
“I’m playing at five of the performances, doing solo, duo and trio gigs this coming first weekend. Then I join forces with the lovely Danish singer Cathrine Legardh in a quartet setting, where we’ll be performing some of her brand new music. I’ve also found the time for a new constellation: a duo project with the Icelandic saxophonist Sigurdur Flosason.”
Another sideman gig for Søren at Vinterjazz sees him teaming up with the great Cuban percussionist Eliel Lazo’s Quartet for a concert in the north of Jutland at a place called Halkærs Kro (http://www.halkaer.dk/HalkAer-Krobr–Kulturhus.aspx?ProductID=PROD89&PID=1&VariantID=VO2.VO4). “I’m particularly excited about this” he adds. “It’s my first encounter with Cuban music.”
It’s going to be a full evening of percussion music, since the Quartet is one of two acts that night. “The second is Marilyn Mazur Trio, which includes two fantastic Swedes – Josephine Cronholm and Krister Jonsson.”
“And then, on 28 February, I’m off to Canada for my first tour there. But that’s another story…”
