Søren’s getting a steady stream of emails asking the same question: when is his next Trio album going to be released? It’s coming, don’t worry, but you’re going to have to wait a little while longer.
“Work has definitely started” says Søren reassuringly. “We were in the studio in March to record two tracks, which are both original compositions written by me. These are what we call ‘demo’ recordings, made essentially for us to hear what we sound like together as a group. They might make it to the final album – and they might not.” You can hear one of the songs, Haarlem Landscape, here:

“I originally wrote Haarlem Landscape as part of an opening event for an exhibition at Denmark’s National Gallery called ‘European Art 1300-1800’” explains Søren. “Together with the singer Ditte Rønn, my duo partner in our collaboration RØST, we were invited to compose one hour of music using four different paintings from the exhibition.” The painting that was the inspiration for Haarlem Landscape is ‘Dutch Panorama Landscape with a River’ (pictured) by Philips Koninck from 1654.
“We’re going to start rehearsing for the new album on a regular basis in May” Søren adds. “And we’re looking at booking some more studio time later this year. That could be here in Copenhagen, or it might be in another location, like RainbowStudio in Oslo.”
Why Rainbow? “Because the engineer there, Jan Erik Kongshaug, is quite simply one of the best in the world. Probably half of my all-time favourite albums have been recorded in that studio, and/or have been mixed by Jan Erik. Rainbow’s also got a fantastic Steinway model D-274 grand piano from 2013. It’s the Rolls-Royce of pianos! But we’ll see… Nothing final has been decided yet.”
This next album will be the first time that the current Trio line-up has recorded as a threesome, with Kasper Tagel on double bass and Søren’s long-time drummer, Anders Mogensen. (Eva featured Marc Johnson on bass, while the albums A Song For You, From Out Here and Searching all had an electric bass played by Niels Ryde.)
“The fact that it’s our first recording together makes this project an important milestone for us, since it puts the ‘official seal’ on our collaboration as a trio” Søren says. “And it will be very much a combined effort, because both Kasper and Anders are also working on some compositions for the album.”
At the moment, a realistic timeframe for the finished recording to emerge is early 2016. But we’ll keep you fully posted on progress and, of course, the eventual release date.
